De vier melodiesnaren worden met de wijs-, middel en ringvinger van de rechterhand getokkeld of eventueel door de rechterhand als akkoord aangeslagen. De duim voegt de bourdonsnaar toe. De vier melodiesnaren worden verkort door de vingers van de linkerhand op de toets te plaatsen.
